U.S. weekly jobless claims total 853,000, the highest since Sept. 18. First-time claims for unemployment insurance were expected to total 730,000 last week, according to economists surveyed by Dow Jones.

Stocks were mostly flat on Thursday, following a decline in the previous session led by tech shares. Traders kept an eye on Washington as lawmakers try to reach a deal on additional fiscal stimulus.

Meanwhile, Pfizer continued to roll out its vaccine in the U.K., and Canada recently cleared it for use. Jobless claims rose more than expected, creating investor uncertainty about the economy while Covid-19 cases surge in the U.S.
