It could take years to evict Russia from the US networks it hacked, leaving it free to destroy or tamper with data, ex-White House official warns

Russian hackers have likely seized control of hundreds of US federal government computer networks, and it could take years to work out how many and remove them, a former advisor to President Donald Trump has warned. wrote that the "magnitude of this national security breach is hard to overstate.

"While the Russians did not have the time to gain complete control over every network they hacked, they most certainly did gain it over hundreds of them," he wrote. "It will take years to know for certain which networks the Russians control and which ones they just occupy." "In the networks that the Russians control, they have the power to destroy or alter data, and impersonate legitimate people."
