The Herald's View: The tourism sector has been devastated by the pandemic, but the industry has also been cruelled by political opportunism associated with arbitrary border closures

The closure of state borders since the pre-Christmas coronavirus outbreak in Sydney has hit the nation’s tourism industry hard, just when it was looking to get back on its feet after a year of bushfires and lockdowns.

Before COVID-19, almost one million Australians were employed in the tourism sector, a part of the economy which has suffered disproportionately during the pandemic. Tourism employment has fallen by 15 per cent compared to 5 per cent in the wider economy. The industry deserves support. It is a difficult area. No one wants to repeat the experience of the US and Europe, where attempts to "live with the virus" and relax lockdowns led to hundreds of thousands of deaths.

They want to destory Australia

So Premiers kept borders closed because it made them popular? That theory was insipid 6 months ago. Now it’s just tired propaganda. Covid has taught me that all our news media, not just the obviously corrupt NewsCorp, have threatened our response to Covid more than any Premier.

The tourism industry would easily win if they simply advertised 2 people in their own state/This 'View' from th herald is pure poli bull shit/There were 1000's of people willing 2 holiday & explore their own states/AND THE Border closure-Was brilliance by Annie keeping Qld safe.

The tourism industry would be great if we used remote, ventilated facilities for quarantine.Who’d want to travel and stay in a Sydney CBD contaminated hotel where the air conditioning pumps out Covid? 1/2

The tourism industry would be so much worse off if governments had listened to SMH rather than the health experts and allows the pandemic to run amok

This is 💩

So disappointed with your content. Say goodbye to this subscriber. I’m sure you’ll get new people to pay for this tripe.

Absolute garbage. If you cared about people (like my neighbours) in the tourism industry you'd be advocating for greater & ongoing financial assistance, not arguing they should be obliged to open their doors to potentially infected travelers and tourists. ThisIsNotJournalism

Gladys is the best

In the order of priority during a pandemic, tourism is not in the top 10.

One word for you at SMH....bullshit

Independent always is my response and no one should forget it. 🤐

'Arbitary' ? since we live in States, it isn't arbitrary, its a line of legal jurisdiction. And then their is the issue of the virus crossing the arbitrary Blue Mountains, suggesting that rather than there being too many arbitrary borders, there simply aren't enough of them.

Two Liberals one Labor yet all states have had border closures.

Yeah. Nah. If the border closures were arbitrary, why is all the plague in NSW?

Apparently stopping the main vector of the virus (I.e. people) travelling from areas that have the virus circulating to areas that do not is arbitrary now?

WA's tourism industry is doing quite well

Wait for it, coming up in the next article - Best way to fund this will be increase PAYG taxes on anyone who earns 60 K and above, any unused money can be given to spin doctors who can prune the tough guy persona of Chairman McGowan, chairman Dan and Chairman Anna

The Swedish Morning Herald

There is nothing arbitrary about border closures. AnnastaciaMP makes decisions based on health advice and for the safety of Queenslanders. Other Premiers looking after their states. Gladys makes convoluted wishy-washy decisions compromising community health in NSW.

Why do all SMH opinion pieces suggest a copy and paste job direct from IPA pieces?

CancelFairfax

The Herald's view is IPA/LNP propaganda.

CancelFairfax

I'm curious - did the SMH have an official position of opposing the border closure to Vic during the height of their cases? Or have they always maintained their 'keep all state borders open always & don't try to contain the virus from spreading' view they are advocating now?

The PM's view

editorial? no one owns up for this pathetic shit scribbling?

A reason I cancelled my subscription to SMH a after nearly 20 years. Noticed decline in the quality and fair-mindedness of the articles. Your editorial ignores fact that majority supported their Premiers in border closure. COVID cruelled tourism - use of 'but' above is telling.

The old 'When the Liberal Party governments close borders, it is the correct decision, but when Labor run states do the same for the same reasons, it is wrong' argument from Peter Costello's media outlet. Such double standards based on political parties is so new and exciting.

The more the herald tweets its view the less I like it

F**k the Herald just another apoligist for the Government!

Please research & learn how it works in Qld (actual journalism) ‘Queensland kept its borders shut for longer than needed after the Crossroads Hotel outbreak in August because Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk used it as a campaign issue at the state election in October’ - false

Listening to the mayor of Coffs Harbour this morning they’ve had waiting lists for accommodation. Judging the traffic heading south these past few days tourism in Australia is booming

auspol CancelSMH CancelTheAge The Herald’s view 👇

More garbage. Some of the claims made in this article are rolled gold garbage. CHO's have advised state govts re border closures, so the claims re the Premiers politising borders for political advantage is absolute bullshit. I don't eat tripe & I certainly don't want to read it.

what utter bullshit

Enough this getting out of hand all PR and lies and no substance

The authors of crap like this won't even put their name to it.

Bottom line is...there is no leadership from ‘Mr Morrison’. He can’t be tough with the States ( excluding ‘courageous’ NSW of course) because he is weak and vacillating and his ministers are crooks or nitwits ( take your pick) He can’t have them take charge. They are useless.

We could have always followed the advice of ScottyFromMarketing and ended up as screwed as the US

Arbitrary? Hardly.

Regional towns are booming because overseas tourism has stopped and everyone is travelling locally.

If premiers didn't close the borders, how else do you think you would have given credits to Scomo for controlling the virus? His CovidSafe app didn't work, he doesn't manage Hotel Quarantine.

It’s a pity the new ownership of the SMH has adopted the partisan model of LNP cheering to compete with Newscorp. An Editorial platform with the community is a privilege- don’t abuse it.

On Hamilton island atm. A major tourist destination. The place is packed. All accommodation is taken restaurants fully booked, the only reef trips available are on New Year’s Day and all the golf buggies are rented. This is after the cancellations from people in nsw.

When govt is warned of dangers to tourism by climate change eg destroying Great Barrier Reef, it falls on deaf ears. Now tourism is endangered by actions to save lives, we’re supposed to be upset? The efforts to endanger people by media is mind blowing.

I can't see anything about who won the SydneyToHobart, can you let us know? ... COVID19nsw GladysOutbreak GladysCluster GladysLooksTired

Another day, more pro-Gladys propaganda. I think the accountability you’re looking for is from the NSW premier. The outbreak is in NSW - get it under control and the borders will open.

And at least have the courage to name the journalist who wrote this rubbish.

It’s been affected by a pandemic, not ‘political opportunism’.

No.

Labor’s fault again 🤔

Let the fools run- The quiet ppl already see it. It is only 'the rupert lackeys' (no sir yes sir suck suck) that are perpetuating the political ideals of the paper boy; his legacy is getting lost in this digital era as he continues to push one-eyed agendas w/o regard for humanity

What is this garbage? The border closures haven't been arbitrary - they're an important part of how the premiers have managed the pandemic. Regional tourism is going full steam as people adapt their holiday plans.

Perfect example of another casualty of the Covid pandemic: responsible journalism. The percentage of partisan drivel has risen dramatically. auspol

Australia’s ability to close its external borders was probably the biggest aid we had to avoid the worst impact of COVID. States’ ability to do the same added to that. That isn’t opportunism, it’s smart policy that saved countless lives and long term health problems for many.

Can you now do an article on the ravaged University Sector that saw squat all help! Or aren't they LNP donation dicks? Helllllooooo Worlddd must be feeling the pinch right up the rear sphincter huh 🤣🤣😂🥰😙

Just fold.

Irresponsible garbage. Time to block your gutter account.

What rubbish. This is what happens when the Libs get hold of a media outlet. This shit is blatent Costello. No wonder subscriptions are falling. auspol

I’m not sure that the Western Hemisphere has ever been as divided as it is now. Countries are at each other (Europe) and states and territories (US & Aussie) are fighting each other and the Feds. This is very troubling. This is a time when we need our friends to be friends.

Can see the end of smh with this sort of drivel. No longer a serious news-p.

The outback tourism industry, DIY & road trips are going gangbusters. People who can’t fly off overseas like they do every year are holidaying at home. Qantas & Flight Centre are on the TV bitching every night. Bunnings, Harvey Norman & Toyota are rolling in dough. COVID19Aus

Have a look at the front page of couriermail - tourism boom in Qld, thanks to decisive leadership of AnnastaciaMP

Nothing arbitrary about closing borders to prevent the spread of Covid.

Pandemic ravaged Arts industry needs urgent help. Spare me the tears, so many sectors need help but this government has abrogated it's responsibility, totally. Isn't this the story?

Used to love the SMH. Shame.

Credibility of SMH is a joke. ThisisNotJournalism

Your poor subscription dept was desperately trying to keep me yesterday. But I gave them feedback as to why I’m gone. You keep doing this don’t you? Btw of course tourism is fked, so is retail and hospitality, so wouldn’t it be good if we had a Fed gov who did something to help?

Ah, one amateur op-ed doesn’t reflect the papers view but an editorial from someone without a medical degree on border closures does. Maybe they’re right. Maybe it IS us!!!

It’s not the other states fault just because NSW decided to ‘live with’ the virus. Corrupt Gladys could have tried for elimination but instead went for suppression. She has herself to blame.

This is embarrassing. The editors have somehow come to the consensus that every single state, based on their own independent health advice, are collectively motivated by 'political opportunism' when they recommend their states close off to an outbreak during Christmas. Delusional

It's telling you put Palaszczuk as the picture when she had more reason to close than all other states. The amount of movement between the two areas during this time is massive, and it's no surprise there's been two positive cases from travellers. You're lacking sense

Interesting that every single chief health officer in the country opted for 'political opportunism' during Christmas after an outbreak. Is it possible that your reading on this is just totally off? This level of delusion is only possible in NSW rn, and unfortunately it's rife

Yawn. More propaganda. Such a useless little rag the SMH is now.

omg lol

Has anyone heard how Hello World is doing? I guess JobKeeper came to the rescue.

Murdoch baloney - with closed borders Queenslanders have enjoyed their own state, as I am sure other states have as well, keeping the Aussie dollar within the country.

Arbitrary? No, essential border closures

More garbage opinion pushed forward by vested interests. The SMH is not ‘independent’. A propaganda newsletter for conservative and vested interests. AUSPOL nswpol

But , there's job keeper , job seeker , gov't looks after all Australians ; they keep saying so !

The Herald’s view had as much reputation as the imprinted slogan on toilet paper.

Qld border restrictions were in sync with state elections and job keeper, try keeping the borders closed without financial assistance for affected workers?

QLDers should be forced to pay a levy (like the rest of Australia did for the QLD floods) to pay for the catastrophic border closures by Premier Palachook

Better to close borders and restrict interstate travel than have the virus spread nation wide . The premiers who are closing their borders , requiring interstate travelers to go into 2 weeks quarantine are doing exactly the right thing to protect their own states' residents.

More garbage from CnutCostello FakeFairfax CancelFairfax

Faced with a decision to side with an expert, be it medical, science, engineering, IT on one hand or an economist and big business on the other, the smh always sides with money. And they wonder why nobody trusts them anymore.

I don't think England and the USA have tourism disruption as their prime worry right now.

Yeah nah. Your view is not based on Science or the facts Your view is a threat to our health, safety and ALSO the economy. There's no economy if Covid-19 gets out of control

And as usual the Arts gets no assistance whatsoever. We never did see any of that $200 million Covid assistance for the arts industry.

Blocking SMH. If they think that border closures were arbitrary during a pandemic and not because it was essential to limit the spread, then it's also taking a hand in undermining public health that protects us BLOCKED

CancelFairfax

I think we all know by now that Australian style federalism is a huge problem. If we could just rewrite the constitution....

It’s amazing an editor can ignore major facts and brush over issues. The qld ignored its own guidelines is rubbish maybe by a day. The lack of internationals is the biggest issue they made up 36% of the market. Seriously you would have thought research was key to journalism

I feel for the tourist industry among others but my 90 yr old dad is happy with closed borders & restricted movement & I mourn the death of... But apparently the federal govt is looking after citizens by handing over millions to their mates Thanks for nothing govt

it’s a major event that the country is shut down with in the country not by federal no by the local government not as an preventive but protective step! No where in the world anywhere it’s been implemented for so long and so quick! Shameful and heartless!!

I remember when was only slightly dogshit

When Cannabis is legalised I’ll happily travel around intra/inter state and be a tourist, sample locally grown flowers... Spend money. nswpol qldpol springst auspol

Scare people, close the border, gain a few votes. At what cost? An entire multi billion dollar industry destroyed. The only one that did a decent job was Gladys

But Dan has smashed it 🤪

No power hungry State Premiers killed tourism.

It’s such a blow to people who are relying on tourism for their lively-hoods. Prayers go out to the people who have lost a lot.
