I used Marriott points to book 5 nights in an all-inclusive desert villa worth nearly $10,000 — and it might be the world's best hotel for social distancing

. While you'll usually get better value by transferring your points to other partners, it's a good way to boost your balance if you're short on points for an award stay. 'But won't you get bored with nothing to do in the desert?'

After the many stresses of 2020, I was frankly ready to unplug off the grid and spend my days reading in the sand. But Al Maha has plenty of activities to keep you occupied, and with two exceptions they're included in your rate.

We started each day with breakfast out on the terrace of the Al Diwan restaurant, usually pairing a granola bowl with a heartier dish like shakshuka, oat pancakes, or just about any egg preparation you could imagine. Lunch we usually enjoyed out on the deck of our villa, with a bit more privacy save for the occasional wandering gazelle.
