EXCLUSIVE: GitHub is facing employee backlash after the firing of a Jewish employee who suggested 'Nazis are about' on the day of the US Capitol siege

The former employee, who is Jewish and had family who died in the Holocaust, told Insider that he sent the original message because he wanted to warn people to be careful: The mob rampaging through the US Capitolassociated with far-right, white-supremacist, and neo-Nazi groups. He tells Insider that he has Jewish family living in the Washington DC area, and was concerned for their safety and the safety of his coworkers.

The backlash against his firing spilled out into the weekend, as GitHub COO Erica Brescia sent a message to all employees on Sunday saying that the company is "actively looking" into the situation and will take "any appropriate action after running a thorough process." You can read more of the message below.," Brescia wrote in the message, viewed by Insider. "Period. This applies to both our everyday interactions with other Hubbers and any separation decisions.

"The tech industry can be very insular," the former employee said. "This can be an opportunity for people to see white supremacy is a problem. It's not just a cultural thing. It can be a structural thing."does not tolerate discrimination, harassment, or retaliation

tech company contracted by ICE happens to be the same one to fire a Jewish man for calling out nazis smfh you cant make this shit up

Jeez how can some people be so dumb... How does this person manage to find two matching shoes in the morning...

Another clickbait outrage headline. In hindsight we know that a few nazis were present. At that moment the employee probably didnt and was referring to republicans in general. Which is deplorable and insensitive towards holocaust survivors, whatever you political view.

Well the actions that github took shows their true colours. Its such a shame that not only are these racist actions are taking place, but now openly.

Fired 2 days later. He could be a very difficult employee that wouldn't stop after formal warnings. Politics should be banned at work if others do not like it. Github VP did the right thing in regards to stopping the convo.

Sounds like someone github HR needs to be fired!! This is ridiculous!

I smell a lawsuit. The employee called the Jew-hating terrorists “Nazis.” That wasn’t incorrect. They didn’t label their co-workers “Nazis.” They correctly called some of the terrorists what the represented: Nazism. Someone in law, represent this employee, please!

You know what could have prevented this? A union.

github is pro Nazi?

ok good

Reminder that GitHub, when its co-founder CEO was forced to step down a few years ago, made the announcement in a blog post that included a video of the CEO “passing the fedora” to one of the other co-founders 🙄

Investigate the people involved in firing him and give this dude back his job. He was right.

A Jewish worker tried to warn his fellow employees about an imminent threat and smoothbrains on Twitter are debating whether or not 'Nazi' is a slur. This is how easily distractable we are, and a textbook case of how the radical right exploits that weakness.

They were flying nazi flags. He wasn't wrong

The employee says he sent the message during the meeting where he was officially terminated from GitHub, before his corporate accounts got deactivated. Important detail. This message wasn't the reason he was fired, but a parting shot

Hey Microsoft, if you're going to fire Jewish employees for saying that nazis are where nazis were, How can I trust that Github employees won't doxx me to nazi websites?!?

Tech industry HR is always horrible. How on earth would anyone sign-off on a firing *in this context* If the employee really is a pain to work with, reassign them for a few months, put them on a performance plan, THEN terminate if things really are that bad.

Good, he deserves to be fired for spouting such ignorant lies.

I see the headline as being something more like “GitHub shit chuds pledge to create hostile work environment, announce gaslighting initiative; “hate has a home here”

Is github run by Nazis? 🤔

github wHAT THE FUCK

WTF github ?! Nazis are literally here. It’s not slander or insult. Racists claiming not enough Jews were killed were storming the capital.

AS THEY SHOULD

github why?

I'm curious to know what heated debate took place under that message.

This man lost his job before Trump, the person who *instigated* this attack, did... we live in The Bad Place

This whole thread is full of nazi ideas. You should all be ashamed of your comments and behaviour.

Pretty dishonest to scream this headline and have the details behind the payeall.

Wow if this is true, I am at a loss of words. How can we really fight back? Github really holds all OSS projects more than any other platform.

This whole thing is stupid! Terrible move github

We should all start opening issues on their repos about this.

Well they kinda deserved it? Even if they are Jewish or not, you can't just assault protesters by calling them nazi. It's like calling BLM something equally horrible. I suspect they said this before capitol

I feel like there's got to be more to the story. If saying 'stay safe homies, there are Nazis around' on 1/6 is literally is all the fired employee did, I can't imagine an HR person from a gigantic corporation would fire someone for that.

There were people wearing shirts calling for a second holocaust and shouting Heil Hitler, it's unbelievable they would fire someone for saying the truth about Trump's supporters.

This would be acceptable in 1933, but is that REALLY the look the technology sector wants?

You mean even after seeing a Confederate flag and the men wearing hoodies with the words 'camp Auschwitz ' plastered across their chest. There's still offence that they're neo nazis? Shame on github 🚮

not a good look github Microsoft

rstats community does anyone have any insight as to the truthfulness of this claim? If so, wtf do we do?

WTF github .....

What?

If he wasn't Jewish? What's he point for businessinsider to state his tribe? Is it true that 'Nazis were about'?

BitBucket is a lovely alternative to GitHub. Microsoft owns GitHub. Linux is actually getting a lot better at gaming. Just saying.

call that hebrews mama ... she needs our help

So github is pro Nazi?

Nazi sounds close enough to me

There was a man at the Capitol wearing a sweatshirt that said 'Camp Auschwitz'

This is why we need unions

I am sick these reactions, are the Jews some supreme race?

XeuleBot

GitHub: Wait, You’re Not Jewish, Right?

reclamandy

Nazis were literally about

What the fuck github

They were wearing pro-Nazi gear and carrying Nazi flags...

Gotta love those at-will employment laws.

github Microsoft A few of your customers would like an explanation about this as well. Why are you firing people for stating facts?

hblodget Anyone driving a Mercedes today must be a Nazi. It clearly was part of the Nazi socialist industrial machine.

You know who doesn't cape for nazis? gitlab

GitHub, I'm no longer using your services.

fuck github

github Jesus GitHub, wtf

Reader, Nazis were, indeed, about.

jack_daniel I've found, through work experience, that one doesn't usually get fired for being right. My mistake. Apparently this isn't always true.

WTF github

Microsoft you’re better than this... do the right thing and reinstate this employee

Nazis were, in fact, about.

I mean, there literally were neo nazis out and about?

Every GitHub employee should post the word nazi in the company’s main Slack channel. See how leadership can fire all of them and run a business. This is so messed up.

devonzuegel ?

ProjectLincoln Microsoft on your list?

This is sad. Unfortunately companies with great products are not a reflection of great leadership. OTOH, for all you github employees or former employees that want to build, gretel_ai is hiring and we aren't assholes. Oh, and we hate Nazis.

Wrongful termination, get that paper, achi

So he was fired for a pattern in behavior. That means he was a shit starter. Well deserved imo

Is it a hub run by Gits?

But did he lie?

_jfarrell Guess its time to switch to BitBucket

EFF ACLU have y’all seen this?

Where was the lie? There was literally a guy wearing a camp Auschwitz sweatshirt.

Back then it was IBM actively aiding the nazis, I see they got microsoft for themselves too this time around. Great job huh

github Microsoft Why is standing up for Nazis worth it? We talk a lot in tech about the future. What future are you building here?

.natfriedman what is this? There were literal Nazis there!!!!!

tech bros are nasty folk

correctly suggested

Can anyone sum up what exactly happened (even though I got the feeling another tech company kinda exposed its nazi truth) ?

A safe place to work for Nazis is a bold employer branding strategy.

It's behind a paywall, and I am not seeing any other journal reporting this. I'll wait...

what the fuck natfriedman

BASED GITHUB

Why tweet articles if you have a hard paywall? All that does is make me look for the information elsewhere instead of giving me the option to support you by choice.

Bloody gits

Slam-dunk faulty dismissal case

that’s github for you. They say they want to be progrssive but flinch and sacrifice their own people if the chud programmers get their panties twisted

Everyone is taking a stand against fascism, even twitter and Facebook. Everyone except github

They were bought by Microsoft. 'Nuf said

This is why you don't say anything political at work. Not even stuff that's popular. The 1 unofficial rule at just about every workplace is 'don't embarrass management or put them in a bind'. My guess is that 'Nazi' is on their list of prohibited slurs.

Nazis literally WERE about! Wtf

maybe don’t paywall an article about nazis, this actively discourages me from paying for your other content.

He wasn't wrong. Nazi is and isn't a four letter word.

GitBentHub

Microsoft owns github now and you would think that with their left leaning posturing they would get in front of this way sooner. This looks really ugly, y’all.

wait. github fired someone for telling the truth?

Everyone: What's your favorite alternative to github? gitlab? Or something?

Microsoft why did y’all do this? 🤔

github why are you protecting literal Nazis by firing your employees? Microsoft you own this company now. Why are you supporting this?

Amurica, where bullies are coddled and the people they hurt are blamed.

Considering some of them branded Nazi tattoos and Nazi symbols on tshirts their children were wearing- he was right and github is done

Maybe we should see how many of those decision makers used to have Parler accounts, eh?
