Research suggests that tests for computer-tech jobs are designed in a way that puts women and minorities at far greater risk of failing

Many technology companies bemoan how difficult it is to find good employees. A new study suggests the companies themselves might be partly to blame.

At issue is a widespread reliance on what is known as the technical interview process. In addition to the usual vetting of credentials seen in many industries, technical interviews typically subject job candidates to layers of intense testing. Generally, such tests evaluate critical thinking and problem-solving skills. They can include brainteasers and complicated technical problems unrelated to actual on-the-job roles and responsibilities.

The trouble is this: Candidates often get so flustered from the pressure and the mechanics of the interview that their performance is significantly hindered. Companies that rely on these stressful tests are eliminating potentially qualified candidates—to their own detriment, says Christopher Parnin, assistant professor of computer science at North Carolina State University and senior author of the, which was published in November. This is particularly unfortunate, Dr. Parnin says, given the availability of other, less stressful and perhaps more appropriate testing metrics.

Relying on technical interviews can also have a disproportionate impact on minorities and other underrepresented groups, and discourage job seekers from applying, Dr. Parnin says, noting that even senior-level employees can be afraid to transfer within their own organizations for fear of failing such tests.

US needs the best of the best, not this equality of race or sex. US has plenty of high-tech individuals that could treat this as a game against China and Russia. The new area for gamer and tech savvy individuals to help our country be protected against other illegal activities.

These tech companies apply 4, 5 part interviews for American applicants and as consequence eliminate applicants mostly women and minority citizens. Yet, I bed those future tech workers from abroad seeking US employment don't go through the same rigorous interviews/tests.

Maybe those tech should work on the atmosphere they cultivate in the workplace.

Technical interviews are kind of stupid. Most jobs will never require you to code or design algorithms in front of an audience or without a reference. There can be a place for tests but if you base everything in software engineering on this you will miss out on great employees.

It's boring to sit at home alone, looking for someone to spend time with

SQL injection!

Because U.S universities with there $250k a year Diversity Deans would rather teach how racist the world is to minorities even though it’s a lie than explain no 2+2 isn’t racist if it equals 4. So we graduate fucking idiots.

When you keep giving stupid critical stressful test, that does not relate to the job! You end up with geeks who can't apply knowledge !!!

tech If You Want Them Train Them! BlackLivesMatter Democrats Progressives Inequality

They have to be raised knowing that their labor is their blessing and with a work ethic.

They get tax breaks and pay lower wages to H1B Visa employees They probably voted in the 2020 election ..If Bidens administration condones this Policy .. US labor again took a punishing blow in the first 100 Days

Fear of slavery in your area? That is one of the first symptoms, bad customer service. Maybe they are trying tosay they are not slave material to a inside ring?

Tech companies complain so that they can hire low paying H1B visa candidates.

I like technical interview sections. Both from the perspective of the interviewer and interviewee. In person or solo.

As a retired school teacher, I can tell you, the first thing employment and college recruiters would ask me about a student that recommended me for comment was, did the show up for school everyday. Attendance is number one.

Yup. They are asking for things that in many cases are not relevant to the actual job. Overkill-interviews..

People, read the article. There is nothing about any visas..

Weeding out anyway not on a visa so they can control the pay & attitude of the employee.

Same people who want more diversity and inclusion in the workplace require Bachelor’s degrees, decent GPA’s and high profile internships. 😂 We’re open to anyone who fits a highly specific set of skills and resume is hilarious

It's almost as if us students have known this for years 🤔

This is like people who cry about not being able to find their 'perfect mate'. Your standards are too high, bitches. Pick randomly and work with them.

They want ten years experience on 8 year old frameworks

If they are private companies they can dp what they want right? What happened to that narrative?

SQL injection

The key is to stop screening for relevant aptitudes and training, and start screening for genitalia and melanin. Problem solved.

Math is racist and NOW sexist?

These tests are poor, contract to hire is a better answer. BTW, the recruiting process is brutal

As is all educational testing—no surprise

In other words, dumb down the tests because this idiot researcher has concluded that tests are designed to determine most qualified and the groups he works for can’t qualify from tests. Let’s pay everyone $1M to because of skin color - no testing.

GTFO enough of this shit!! It's all so tiresome.

Cuz Tech companies rather have cheaper foreign labor

No, when it is a same test for all, it is The Same Test for everyone. sametest

That's just an excuse to bring in more and more migrant tech workers from other countries. American tech workers are left behind because the migrant workers are cheaper and more obedient.

Maybe they are necessary to do the job? How twisted is society?!

Technology tests don’t work for most jobs, - especially senior ones - which is why many major players have been abandoning them. Personally I find it insulting when HR wants to have be do tests or assignments for a field I have 10 years of achievements in.

The answer on that board opens the site to a classic SQL injection attack and hasn’t been acceptable for about a decade now. It also neglects any server-side validation. Fail.

As long as the selection process is this, made by bias people and asking abstract problems, what other disastrous outcome would you expect? You can't find more Steve Jobs nerds detached people..how weird!woman are not successful because they never have THE CHANCE to be

Can we call a time out from this continuous obsession about women and minorities? There are millions of people belonging to these categories that are successful and accomplished. The ranting comes so often from people who wants a special pass in life....

It means women are less intelligent than men ?! Or there is another interpretation for that conclusion?

How dare they put potential employees on the spot... lol. It’s great that other methods can work better but you really should be able to solve problems with a proctor present

Cue the people who don't need to read the article first to have a strong opinion about it.

All test are going to put minorities at further risk of failing if democrats keep cuddling them like their race is the problem they can learn....

Suggests?
