The FDA approved of new drug, Wegovy, to be sold in the U.S. and marketed for weight loss. The drug has been modified from Novo Nordisk's diabetes drug semaglutide.

A popular diabetes medication made by Novo Nordisk has been approved to be sold in the U.S. as a weight-loss drug by the Food and Drug Administration, the Associated Press reported on Friday.

Dr. Harold Bays, medical director of the Louisville Metabolic and Atherosclerosis Research Center, helped run the studies on Wegovy, as well as other obesity and diabetes drugs. Dropping even five percent of one's weight can bring health benefits, such as improved energy, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels, but it often doesn't satisfy patients who are focused on weight loss, Bays said.
