Leaders in the tourism sector have welcomed plans to reopen Australia’s international borders with Tourism and Transport Forum’s CEO Margy Osmond hailing the proposal as “music to the tourism industry’s ears”.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian, earlier this week, flagged her intention to lift restrictions on international travel once the state reached its 80 per cent vaccination target, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison welcoming the move.“I think it has always been in the back of the mind of the NSW government that if they could reach this vaccination level, they would feel confident about opening.

“This would be a great thing particularly at this point in time because there are a couple of problems that we really, genuinely have and that is, as the rest of the world opens up, there’s enormous pressure for our international airlines to send their planes, their pilots to other parts of the world.

“And then we have to win them back to Australia when we are actually ready to open so the sooner we open and the more able we are to keep those flights coming into Australia, the better.”

DanicaDeGiorgio Hey danika

We've always been told NSW and Australia are reliant on tourism, well we've had little to no tourism for 18 months and our economy is fine. Strange that! More Gov $$ for manufacturing, less for tourism I say! RealMarkLatham PaulineHansonOz pm_live RossCameron4 rowandean

But given Aus will be a sea of death, a collapsed health system and an inevitable return to lockdowns by Christmas, Margie would do well to not get too excited…..

So, when that causes cases to skyrocket, will the Tourism and Transport Forum accept responsibility for their part in it?

You will be disappointed.

Did you ask SA and Tasmania premiers?

Everyone wants open borders, travel and tourism, but not everyone wants to do it too early

Zero covid is going well then?

NSW talks a big game...

Excluding w.a and qld, I would hope!
