Activists bringing High Court case will claim government support for fossil fuel extraction is inconsistent with UK’s legal duty to achieve net zero emissions by 2050

Three environmental campaigners are challenging the UK government, arguing the state-owned Oil and Gas Authority’s current mode of operation is unlawful because it encourages production of oil and gas.

 

Neither NGOs nor the courts should seek to micromanage the UK's progress to net zero. That target is and must be a genuine one. But the Government also has a responsibility to ensure energy supplies and economic security for the UK in the period of transition.
