Four people have lost their lives and 13 injured in two separate head-on collisions in Polokwane, Limpopo on Sunday. Three were killed when two vehicles collided on the N1 by-pass near the Peter Mokaba stadium.

A driver was also killed on the N1 north just outside Polokwane. Traffic authorities attribute the collisions to reckless and negligent driving.

Traffic spokesperson Mike Maringa is urging motorists to drive with care as it is raining in some parts of the province. “We are urging motorists to take extra caution especially in the district where roads are wet they must reduce speed and follow a safe driving distance. The two fatalities reported on Sunday afternoon are as a result of speed and unsafe overtaking. Pedestrians must also double check before they cross the roads in the districts especially in Vhembe and Sekhukhune where it is raining,” says Maringa.

Meanwhile, one person died when a bakkie overturned on the N2 between Berlin and Qonce in the Eastern Cape on Sunday. Provincial Department of Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose says three people have been seriously injured while three children suffered minor injuries. Binqose says one lane had to be closed to clear the scene.
