Johannesburg Emergency Management Services has urged residents to be cautious when using fireworks as part of New Year’s Eve celebrations this Friday.

Officials will take a zero tolerance approach to the lighting of fireworks outside the curfew hours and will be targeting wholesalers, dealers and distributors to ensure compliance.

The city says, an increased number of officials will continue to conduct enforcement operations this week to ensure both the bylaws and curfew hours are adhered to. The city is discouraging large gatherings on New Year’s Eve which could turn into COVID-19 super spreader events. Officials will take a zero tolerance approach to the lighting of fireworks outside the curfew hours and will be targeting wholesalers, dealers and distributors to ensure compliance.

Fireworks will only be allowed from 11:00 pm to 1:00 am on New Year’s Eve and 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm on New Year’s Day.This can be done in memory of those who have lost their lives to COVID-19.
