Stocks closed higher after deep losses earlier in a volatile day, with the Dow gaining about 100 points after being down more than 1,000

The U.S. dollar last year saw its largest increase in value since 2015. That’s good for many American consumers, but it could also put a dent in stocks and the U.S. economy. WSJ's Dion Rabouin explains. Photo illustration: Sebastian Vega/WSJThe Dow industrials, S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite all finished the day higher after falling sharply in morning trading, a wild close to a volatile day in U.S. stocks.

By the end of the day, the Dow had added 101 points, or 0.3% after being down more than 1000 points in the morning. The S&P 500 also added 0.3%.
