The gov needs to increase the supply. This is just fucking insane

Don't forget that part of the price increase is houses have been getting bigger (more sq. ft.) year by year for 60 years or so. They are a lot bigger than they were on average. There also are fewer people per house. There are many causes of high prices - and this is one of them.
