I spent a lot of time denying the impulse to write. For years I burnt nearly everything I wrote, so disgusted was I by the whole idea of it. Even when I managed to take some pride in my work I had no idea what to do with it; I had no knowledge about publishing, no connections anywhere, and no real desire to out myself as a writer.
