On Wednesday, Spotify announced that it was acquiring two podcast technology companies, Chartable and Podsights.

While having content exclusive to the platform is important, the acquisitions that will likely help Spotify become a profitable company lie with podcast tech platforms, ones that help new creators launch podcasts on Spotify, analyze audience and track marketing performance.

Ashley Carman, senior reporter for The Verge and writer of the “Hot Pods” newsletter, told Jason Calacanis and Molly Wood on the“This whole acquisition is actually about competing with YouTube,” she said. “Spotify wants to compete with YouTube and YouTube is the creators’ platform. That’s where people go to upload their videos.”
