Taxi drivers in Ottawa are worried the industry may die after experiencing multiple blows over many years.

Coventry Connections, the company that runs many of the major taxi brands in the city and taxi union are applying to the City of Ottawa for a rate hike to offset costs.

Numbers from the city show the total licensed drivers went from 1,950 in the year 2019 to 1,125 in 2021. In 2014, there were 2,776 drivers. Taxi drivers always nagging to begin with.

Honestly most taxis in Ottawa were such a rip off with sleezy drivers and extremely poor service. If you don't adapt, you fade away. I know there are some good people in the industry but there's a reason it's dying out.

Advice to taxi drivers....... start a lyft or Uber job. 🙄 If you're not willing to adapt then you're bound to fail.

I use Checker in Calgary as they have implemented all the tech that ride-shares have. It’s less expensive, and no ‘premium time’ gouging.

Autonomous vehicles will change this industry again, very soon.

pretty sure this is not just an Ottawa issue!

No it won't. Taxi is cheaper

Cabs suck, haven't taken one in 5 years. Ride share is far superior. They don't drive like madmen, they're clean, you know how much the ride is going to be; its just a better service overall.

One word: Blockbuster

Uber and Lyft are the technological taxi of the future.🧵 What they did was homonogize the taxi industry so that no matter where you went you know you could be served. You didn't need to know the name of x or y taxi company.

But only in Ottawa, you say.

Let me see now, a rideshare app to track the driver, know when they'll show up and who they are or a taxi, which always stinks of cigarette smoke, drives like a madman with a complete disregard for the rules of road and no idea when they'll come after I request.
