Two Russian oligarchs with business interest in Australia have been sanctioned by the Morrison government, after being omitted from an earlier round of penalties.Oleg Deripaska and Viktor Vekselberg both hold a stake in an alumina refinery in Queensland, while Mr Vekselberg also has an interest in a gas project in the Beetaloo basin in the Northern Territory.

The sanctions mean the Russian billionaires will have their access to assets in Australia frozen, be restricted from engaging in business activity here and also face travel bans. The Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility first raised concerns about the two billionaires in a statement on 28 February calling for them to be sanctioned.Dan Gocher, director of climate and environment at the ACCR, welcomed the sanctions against the pair but questioned “why the government was slower to act” than the US and Britain.

Russian billionaire and businessman Viktor Vekselberg at the 24th Saint Petersburg International Economic on 3 June 3, 2021.He formerly controlled En+, but reduced his stake to 45 per cent, after he was hit with sanctions by the US in 2018.

'omitted' - more like swept aside hoping that no one noticed...

Omitted …. How very convenient

Given time to sort out their assets and only after pressure on social media. This matter warrants deeper investigation on why it took this long & Morrison’s office (which is dominated by fossil fuel execs) managing of this,

Very Good 👍

But no punishment for Westerners committing atrocities on us since first contact!

This government being shamed into finally doing the right thing...again. I'm sure the delay had nothing to do with needing time to work out how their donors could make $ from it.

Giving them some time to cash out if they want, as Bojo did for Abramovich. auspol
