The cloning process is painless: The subject sits in front of a camera for about 40 minutes, reading a special script. The footage and audio provides Synthesia’s algorithms with enough examples of a person’s facial movements and how they pronounce different phonemes to mimic their appearance and voice. The accounting firm says access to the ARI-creation tools is carefully controlled to prevent unauthorized or ill-considered use. “When you have a technology presenting a human-like appearance, it’s a fine line from comforting to eerie,” Woolley says. Her research suggests that rushing to embrace video can sometimes be a mistake.
