It is frustrating to think that sometimes businesses earn money from us for doing nothing. However, unfortunately, it’s rife.

There were no instructions on how to avoid the price increase, just a breezy “There’s no action required as this will happen automatically”. AdvertisementI have had multiple letters from energy retailers over the years announcing “Congratulations. Here’s your new plan,” while hoping I won’t notice the price increase.

It also happens with frequent-flyer miles and points on credit cards. Then there are the millions of dollars worth of airline vouchers that Australians have been given for flights cancelled because of COVID-19 over the past two years. Many of these vouchers may never be redeemed.Governments know the power of human fallibility, too.
