Solution to housing crisis is to either cut population through mass emigration or build more homes

Residential property prices have recovered by about 117 per cent from the trough in 2013 and are currently just 2.5 per cent off their Celtic Tiger peak. Photograph: Rui Vieira/PA Wire

Two plumbers are sitting in my kitchen, drinking tea, shooting the breeze. They are out the door with work. The sites are buzzing and, according to the lads, there is any number of “small jobs”. But the price of materials is crippling everyone and, even if the client can pay, it’s hard to get your hands on everything – from wood to piping to radiators. In fact, they’ve just come back from a run to Belfast to get a few things. It may be tight up there, but not quite as bad as down here.

Higher prices and the huge demand for tradesmen are affecting house prices. The latest news on the housing front is grim. Residential property prices are now 15.3 per cent higher than they were a year ago. The momentum is steeply upwards. Compared with last year, when property prices rose by 3 per cent, the past 12 months have been a nightmare for buyers. Nationwide, houses prices are up 15.5 per cent and apartments are up 14.3 per cent. The cost of apartments in Dublin is surging – 17.

Totally agree with your second option, planning is another problem that needs to be dealt with. I know i am in the construction business.

Perfectly acceptable wooden houses (as seen in Germany, Finland, Norway Sweden etc etc) largely banned in Ireland. Costing about 75K each, up in days and no requirement for tons of environmentally costly concrete. Hint: we have a very active concrate lobby HowIrelandWorks

Specialist subject....

Homelessnessisgenocide. Homelessness is genocide, especially when created by landlord govt. And the Irish support this genocide by voting for these FFFG govts and paying taxes that only go as far as their wages you don't get any services in Ireland for your taxes, just genocide

So you're saying we should chuck all the immigrants of the past few years out? 🤔

They haven't been in control since the 60s

Or ban vulture capitalists, just a thought

So they would prefer mass emigration instead of stopping mass immigration

It's clear this government want to pander to the Ukraine they don't care about their own people.

State has voluntarily ceded control of the housing market.

Cut the population through mass deportation* McWilliams is World economic forum rentboy so it's no surprise he wants the Irish gone.

Or kick out all the foreigners. Just putting it out there.

We don’t need to build more homes. The census stats will make interesting reading. I believe 10-20% of our housing stock lies vacant.

David assuming the state once had control on it. Not since I’ve been alive

Could we have an adult conversation about the many people not from Ireland coming into the country. And no I'm not being racist but I don't know why we can't have a conversation about how we can support them. An example is roma people, they get full welfare & housimg.

That's the attitude 🙄

Hard for councils to meet Housing Targets with the NPF , RSES legislation dezoning zoned land countywide to met population cap imposed to each county by gov . Property regulator imposing dezoning of residential land in county dev plan under NPF guidelines

Or we could run a proper immigration system and deport failed asylum seekers and foreign criminals

I already have chosen to leave the country and go to work in IT in another place where I can rent a lovely apartment in the city centre for the price of a room here and get a higher salary. It is sad because I love Ireland, but I need more money for myself, not for my landlord

It's not complicated. Stop immigration, reduce building standards, build more houses and rubber up boys

There is still massive emigration, and there our brightest and best educated, who will actually contribute as tax payer for nothing in return.

Council houses shouldn’t be for life if your circumstances change. New council estate beside us and first two houses have BMW’s outside. Know a family who got a bigger council house as they have a boat. Ridiculous davidmcw DarraghOBrienTD DeptHousingIRL

The state this, the state that!!! The state has gotten into this fekin mess.. why does everyone expect the state (who make a balls of anything they touch) to house them? The state should be turfed out of the housing market, as they are the ones driving everything mad

Once again……

or stop the mass immigration maybe 🤔

You meant Immigration, right, not emigration? You can't seriously be suggesting the states solution to the housing crisis is to make the population leave? 🙈🤣🤣

Cracking mentality... 🤣🤣🤣

FUCK OFF THIS CANNOT BE REAL

If we can reduce population through mass emigration, surely we can also reduce population by stopping mass immigration. Is David McWilliams having a laugh?

Take a look at Population demographics since 1950, compare that to history and trends of the times and it's a no brainer here. Ireland can manage a population of 4 million but beyond that the system starts to crack.

It's the young Irish that end up having to emigrate because their Government won't allow them to make a life for themselves in their own homeland. Why do we have to shed our own young people so our diabolical leaders can present an image of being Great Humanitarians to the world

Immigration

all this problem is being created through the fault of the state, because the state complained that it could not cope with 7000 thousand asylum seekers, and now it filled ireland full of Ukrainians, giving them another 200 euros per week per person.

Kidnap the hoors that attended the Dalkey book fair, build a catapult put them on it. Welcome to paradise.

Or tax people with multiple houses literally up the arse, so they have to sell. Plenty individuals in Ireland own 50+ properties. Western society has made their own housing like a stock market.

Insightful analysis from the West Brit (now, East Yank) times as always.

How about banning foreign money and speculators using property as an investment?

Harshly put

Irish out Foreigners in The Irish Times: anti-Irish bile since since 1859

MASS IMMIGRATION is the problem......

All very deliberate government policy to control housing market , create investment property wealth and ensure a class of renters permanently and reduce population as it becomes impossible to form family units. Import cheap labour as an antagonistic measure to ruin social order

Does stopping mass immigration and direct provision even get a mention?

_PeterRyan Should have created Patriot Bonds in 2009 for Irish citizens to buy into rather than off-loading “underperforming assets” to vulture funds.

so make the people of this country leave and replace us? odd...

Shut the gates then. We have a negative birthrate, our population is only going to rise via immigration. Why allow people who just got here to join the ever rising demand for housing when younger generations are being shut out?

stop mass immigration.

Or we could stop mass immigration? Although i’d settle for mass emigration for the irish times staff if we have to meet in the middle.

Cut mass immigration instead

Yeah let’s start repatriating foreigners to go home

Why not bring in some emergency powers to buy homes for Irish citizens ?

Need to cut the desk jockies and suits in hard hats out, do that and costs will drop drastically

Or how about cutting mass immigration into the country?

End mass immigration

Solution: cut mass immigration and build more houses.

No need for mass emigration, just stop the mass migration from abroad into Ireland. Stop the asylum charade, and deport everyone in DP.

Paywall

In fairness to David Mac ,had he suggested cut immigration levels, he'd already have found himself blacklisted by official Ireland Blasphemy exists today the same as ever

Mass emigration won’t happen. More likely mass immigration

He’s great a talker but not many realistic solutions

Or stop mass immigration? Why should Irish people be forced out of their own country? McWilliams and his mindset are part of the problem

Why advocate mass emigration of Irish people, sure our brightest & best & most needed, are fleeing in droves already. They’re actual Taxpayers who fund idle, cosy lives for all the imported & homegrown welfare bunnies. With ZERO in return.

Build affordable quality homes for low and middle income is the answer

We need a serious deportation programme programme fast

A state building company would go a long way. It wouldn't solve any problems overnight but it would take the pressure off. The government knew this year's ago but let us get to this point. Now it's completely out of control. The question is why?

Why not stop immigration!

False dichotomy. Presenting two opposing positions or opinions as the only possible solutions to a complex problem.

My money is on mass emigration! The safety valve of emigration has worked a treat down the decades. Why change a winning formula? MichealMartinTD LeoVaradkar MaryLouMcDonald EamonRyan HowIrelandWorks

Mass immigration is obviously the cause of the housing crisis.
