The esports betting market will undoubtedly get a boost in June as OverActive Media announced Thursday that its Toronto Ultra franchise will host Canada’s first Call of Duty league major tournament at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

When Ontario’s regulated online gambling industry opened on the first Monday of April, almost every sportsbook embraced a wave of wagering on the March Madness men’s title game, the return of Tiger Woods to the Masters and the start of the Major League Baseball regular season. For Rivalry and its customers, determining odds and placing bets on the map winner for Counter-Strike or League of Legends — or the first tower kill on League or Dota — dominated the conversation.

“We’re in the infancy of esports betting in North America,” Hearne said. “The Ontario market will show people that esports can be a leader in the space.” “We’re not going to be the Blue Jays’ sponsor,” said Salz, referring to the 10-year partnership TheScore Bet announced with Toronto’s MLB club. “We tried some of that stuff two, three years ago in other markets. We can’t get our customer that way.”
