The energy market operator sees positive signs for the electricity grid after it dodged rolling blackouts across the east coast last week

the inquiry will examine potentially unlawful anticompetitive conduct by the big power generators.

The parent company of EnergyAustralia, the country’s third-largest generator, warned investors it was headed for a half-year loss because of “challenging and extreme” market conditions. Hong Kong-listed CLP Group said outages at EnergyAustralia’s Yallourn coal plant in Victoria and Mt Piper in NSW had helped drive a $1.1 billion earnings drop since January, forcing the company to buy more expensive electricity on the wholesale market.
