"There's a lot of great theater in Houston right now, but we feel we can bring something to the table that's not happening a lot here, especially in the smaller theaters that is we wanted to do some very diverse works, we wanted to do musicals — at least one or two a year — and we wanted to do at least one show that is immersive."

One of Lumpkin's most distinctive moves was to create TUTS Underground where edgier works in the smaller Zilkha Hall at the Hobby Center were staged and were designed to appeal to a younger audience as well as others who in general wanted something other than a mainstream musical.
