Leeds' Kirkgate Market has been slammed as 'depressing' and 'not worth it' by some visitors who said they 'could have cried' at its current state.

One visitor said: "The heart has been ripped out of it, don't bother going in anymore. Such a shame they used to come from miles around," followed by a sad face. Lots of people agreed that the market maybe isn't up to the same standards as before but with supermarkets and the changes in shopping habits, perhaps it is just a sign of the times? With the cost of living crisis and budget shops dominating the high streets, it seems markets and independent traders could suffer the consequences.

An admin of Leedsplace left a comment saying: "I photographed the market for the council about 10 years ago. The stall holders told me the main problem was lack of footfall. The public weren't going in to shop. A worker at Bluebird Bakery, an independent bread and pastry stall said: "I'm quite young so I don't know what it used to be like but I think it's great.

The market does have a lot to offer. Gone are the days of people shopping exclusively at a market but the option is still there. Kirkgate has Italian and Turkish bakeries, a number of fresh fish stalls, several butchers and greengrocers and often times the prices are less than the mainstream supermarkets.
