Update: Con Ed is asking customers in parts of central Queens to conserve energy while it works to make repairs. It has lowered voltage by 8% in certain areas. Find out more:

One of the biggest concerns is how the electrical grid is able to handle it all. With many using air conditioning to stay cool, it's certainly being put to the test.

Thursday morning, Con Edison asked customers in part of central Queens to conserve energy while crews work on repairs. The utility said it cut voltage by 8% in parts of Corona, Elmhurst, Fresh Meadows, Jamaica Estates, Oakland Gardens, Hollis Hills, Kew Gardens, Pomonok and Hillcrest. The area has about Con Ed 84,900 customers.

Customers in that area are asked not to use washers, dryers and microwaves until repairs are complete. The utility also asked customers in that area to use just one air conditioner, and to set it to the highest comfortable temperature.
