NEW: The Merry Dairy says it halted its wholesale operations on Thursday following a visit by an officer from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. ottnews

The owner of a popular Ottawa ice cream business says she's been forced to pull her ice cream from 15 locations across the city after a visit from the dairy police.

Merry Dairy owner Marlene Haley told CTV Morning Live there was no notice of the pending visit from the ministry. "Canada's dairy regime couldn't be more punitive to small businesses in terms of the interests it serves and how it protects those interests. Tonight, it was us. Who knows who is next and why."

rexglacer fordnation as much as I despise Ottawa as a bunch of whiners .... the Agri Gestapo seem to be in full swing ... overreach is unacceptable

MaximeBernier it's for our health

rexglacer Canadians are not free. We need less government.

The minimum the Ministry should have done was send them a notice with a warning and with proper to time to get the authorizations! What an absurd!

Disgusting how the ministry handled this. Kind of sounds like the person who called them wanted to sabotage the business. If the ministry had been doing their job this would have happened a long time ago. Why only now?

I got two pints thursday from the window. These bureaucrats need better things to do. This place is a part of the community and they shut down half their business for a technicality?

It’s about safety and maintaining high standards for consumers. Do your homework and acquire the proper licence. It’s simple.

Sounds like they used the same kind of tactics the language nazis in Quebeckistan use. Show up without notice and shove papers/documents in your face and demand you sign them without reading them first threatening to fine you everyday if you don’t

Sad that it even had to start wholesale operation. Gone are the days where people were out and about supporting the local economy during the day, especially a dairy shop during the summer. We will be missing out for sure.

I'm confused. They use ingredients from a licensed plant to make products which are sold, but they got threatened with fines for not being a licensed plant? Would the same situation apply to a bakery using licensed dairy products in their goods and re-selling them?

Another sad day for small businesses. TheMerryDairy I will still support your wonderful business! Awesome icecream and very glad you are in Hintonburg.

Are we run by an elected government, or a mafia?
