In 2016, every major grocer in Canada, including Loblaws, Sobeys, Metro and Walmart, announced they would stop selling eggs from caged hens by 2025. Six years later and three years from the deadline, more than 20 million chickens are still in cages.

Today, I work with food companies to help improve their animal welfare standards, and I’ve been dismayed to learn that even the largest purchasers of eggs are dependent on an industry as powerful as it is unaccountable to the Canadian public. In 2016, every major grocer in Canada, including Loblaws, Sobeys, Metro and Walmart, announced they would. Over 100 food companies joined them, including leading restaurant chains Tim Hortons, A&W and McDonald’s, and top food manufacturers Nestlé and Kraft Heinz.
