The CEO of a Toronto tech company says a trial into four-day work weeks has been a big success and the experiment even brought forward an "unanticipated" result.

"The early results are fantastic," Wainwright told CP24 Wednesday. "The employees are clearly happier and they are more balanced." Wainwright said the most "unanticipated" result of the trial was how empowered his employees told him they felt knowing the company trusted them to get the job done with a reduced schedule.

He said the trial is also having a "huge impact" on employee retention in a time when companies are struggling with labour shortages.

Doesn't work for everyone

'Unanticipated' .... So ignorant lol who would've thought not working people to the bone for as many hours as you possibly can might actually make them WANT to work instead of staring at their screen spacing out in frustration.

Let me guess... everyone Quiet Quit?

This is fantastic for people on salary, but what about hourly employees? People that need to work 6.5 days a week to even make rent on 10 hr days? The fortunate get more, and the rest of us continue to suffer.

4 day weeks have worked fine for my company (electrician) for years...

As long as the daycare provider or the person caring for kids is up for it. Can’t forget about the pets. Rush hours just got extended. It has its pluses/minuses.

Nice,Good for government more travel more taxes will get

I work 4 x 12s then 4 days off..... works well for me

During a pandemic the had a study on how not to go in to work

My brother does it in UK, loves it and so does his employer

I would do 10 hours a day, i already do it now.

The kind of stress people are under a 4 day work week would be heaven

Well sitting at a computer all day is way easier then moving all day

The unanticipated result is that people are happier and the work still gets done. Save yourself the read.

Imo this will not work unless everyone is on board. Good luck. In competitive industries companies will continue to work 5 or even 6 days a week. Those working 4 days will be left behind.

8 hours is litterly 1/3 of my day, get fucked and make a real offer like come on this is crap, we want to work less not more god damn these companies are greedy

So I can’t spend my dinner time with my children,my family for 4 days? How about 2 days working a week

Stop micromanaging employee and let them do the work and don’t force people to office to make shitty CEO and management happy the same work can be done from then why bother for office and putting fake impression on faces ?

Personally I prefer the 0 day work week.

No surprise. Some hours can be whiled away by those so inclined, but many corporations feared that any change would lead to a loss in productivity.

I work 4 10 hour days and love it

We have a 10 hrs shifts work and we were able to giveaway shifts to get an extra days off😊

Squeezing 5 days into 4 won't help my mental state. Pay me for 40 hours and let me work 32 and now we're talking.

Some very rare and positive news from the corporate world

Can we do a study on those essential services that work 3 shift roations and actually produce goods that others use.

Just show much they were dogfcuking before.

Why are people so resistant to this? Really want to work to death or something?

Been saying this for 30 years.

We have implemented it successfully in my company as well and we have found similar results through our Associates. Some have also chosen to work from home which we gladly accommodated.

sounds smart

This needs to happen. Society would be more healthy, productive,& fulfilled. This life is more than work-sad seeing so many miserable ppl. We need a Canadian division of 4Day_Week 4dayweek_global 4DayWeekIreland 4DayWeekUS If you’re interested in getting it started 4Day_Week

unanticipated to who? this has been proven over and over and over again

A four day work week would do a fucking hell of a lot for our mental health!!!

Catering to millennials working 4 days a week so they can have an extra day to sit on the patios at Liberty Village or Downtown Toronto

Trust is everything.

I would be fine doing a 4 day week at same salary, and reduced hours. No way in hell would I want to move to a 4 day model forcing me to work the same amount of hrs in 4 days that I would have in 5. Not interested in working 9 to 10 hr days just to get Friday off.

This doesn’t work for every sector.

How did it affect their children or child care needs? Did parents put kids in daycare for 12+ hours to cover shift and commute. What did it do to family dynamics being away from parents for 1/2 a day 4 days a week. Did they find daycares without paying extra to cover long shifts?

10 hour a day work week? Or or 8 hour a day work week? Which achieves the same labour hours without affecting income when working 4 days & not 5 days a week?

Its less stressful to work 4 days a week.

Who knew having an extra day off from work was actually good for people 🤷‍♂️

How was a better well being for workers “unanticipated”?! Who wouldn’t like a three day weekend?! Lol

This does not have the same result in many other sectors I.e construction , supervision, services etc

Friendly reminder that the 9-5 day 44 hours a week is over 100 years old.

0 day work week if you work at City, Provincial and Federal Job.

CP24's corporate sponsors won't let them tell you that the results were fantastic in the headline.

With efficient workforce of course the results would be wonderful; if only government employees were that coherent….

Should be law we only operate 4 days a week. Everything shut other 3. Fuck capitalism

Doesn't work for any 'essential' businesses. Even non-essential ones; eventually your clients will get tired of not being able to get a hold of anyone at the company on Fridays and go to the competitor who is open 5 days a week.

This is not at all ‘unanticipated’. I can’t wait to hear the litany of leaders and pundits rushing to establish that their business is ‘different’ and won’t work in a 4 day model. Betting the banks will be first to shut this down.

I currently work a regular 40hr 5 day work week, and I have in the past worked 4 day 10hr weeks (off Fridays). Personally I chose the latter 10 times out of 10! I hope this catches on with employers!

Atalantagg

Interesting how they say it will be potentially part of their benefits package. Does that mean a new person will still have to work through a probation to prove they deserve it? 🤔

Y’all hiring?

Who knew that employees with balance between their work and personal lives would be happier and more productive?

Rogers

Unfortunately a four day work week is a dependent on the type of job that you do and the ability to have employees take a different third day off (e.g. everyone can’t be off on a Friday).

Please God 🙏🏽

It would work for salaried employees but hourly workers will lose hundreds a month

Saving you all a click Spoiler alert: 4 day work weeks seem to be more awesome.

For those of you that don't want to open the link

I’ve done a four day workweek this month and even for this limited time period I’ve noticed my I’ve been feeling less stressed out.

Four-day work week trial at Toronto tech company led to 'unanticipated' result, CEO saysThe CEO of a Toronto tech company says a trial into four-day work weeks has been a big success and the experiment even brought forward an 'unanticipated' result. The problem come when other companies adjust according to lower hours. Some will, some won’t. For those paid hourly, it may cost them 20% of their annual earnings. Employers still expect the same workloads to get done and will show you the door. Before I retired, the workloads had people never taking lunch, working late from home in the evening and weekends. There is no such thing as work-life balance, never has been and never will be. Good evening Sir Justin Trudeau, if you will excuse me, I have four years and two months in Canada on my own, my wife and children are yet to come, and my mental state and that of my wife and children is very bad, please help, Your Excellency
