Kensington Market has lost some popular eateries over the years, but new ones continue to move in. Here’s a look at some of the best new gems.

For years Kensington Market has been the place for up-and-coming taco vendors, from the pop-ups at Perola’s Supermarket to the rotating vendors at the food hall at 214 Augusta Ave. Julio Campos, chef-owner behind one of the market’s newest taquerias, opened Tacos 101 last year. Campos has a slightly bigger space now, with bar-style seating and a bright mural of Frida Kahlo.

There’s also the birria taco, which has seen a surge in popularity in the city in recent years. It features slow-cooked beef and gooey cheese stuffed into a tortilla then sauced with a gravy before the whole thing is grilled and served alongside a consommé for dipping, so be prepared to get messy. “I just wanted to do my own take, something with more pronounced spice and something handmade,” says St. Rose. He launched Crumbs in 2018 at a temporary space near Yonge-Dundas Square, and then popped up at a few other places before finding a permanent spot in the market in February.
