The US economy can keep running without freight trains — but not for long. Here’s how the freight rail strike could affect you.

That is why the risk of the first national railroad strike in 30 years is so worrying to economists and businesses.A brief work stoppage — some previous rail strikes have lasted only hours — likely won’t cause much economic disruption. But a prolonged walkout of a week or more will cripple the nation’s still struggling supply chain, cause widespread shutdowns and shortages, and likely further drive up prices even as inflation remains near a 40-year high.

“The gains we’ve made in the last seven to eight months will be reversed largely if this strike happens,” said Terri Moore, spokesperson for the American Farm Bureau Federation. In addition, farmers preparing to plant for the fall season could see shortages of the fertilizer they need, since the railroads have already stopped accepting shipments because they are classified as hazardous materials in many cases. That could hurt future supplies of crops.

Not sure I can believe anything CNN writes any more?

These rail workers going to mess around and find out. It'd take billions in repaving and adding magnetic roads for truckers to be replaced by automated systems. It would barely take anything for automated rail car systems to be put in place.

Wow let’s go Brandon Holy Christ

This is a big test for Biden. He supports unions and now he has to step up for them now re midterms around the corner, not to mention the economy tanking, if they go on strike.

Go, trains..go! Strike, strike, strike for decent pay, against grueling schedules, poor job conditions and worse yet...running on dangerous, neglected rails and falling apart bridges. In 2021, there were 1,241 train derailments, and badly maintained crossings cause 5,800 a year.

It is criminal how the railroads treat their employees. If they don’t meet the union demands I support a strike.

John Malone please keep cleaning house at CNN. Cannot happen fast enough for Americans and your ratings. Thanks

Joe get the border under control. You have thrown to much free money at economy to fix inflation. Quit lying to Americans, they know recession act is going to increase inflation.

What's happen in American freight trains? Is it possible to further increase inflation…?

Sorry, don't watch CNN anymore.

The rail strike, Putins gas war always some absurdity without reason explanation or excuse. wish I could say crazy excuses like that at work and still keep my job!

Keep our trains rolling

Union Yes! I fully support the strike. For too many years big corps have treated their employees as disposable. Bad working conditions and shitty pay. About time unions stood up.

Now a rail strike. Keep up the good work Biden.

The economy could run without the corrupt scum in DC

You go right ahead and keep leaving out what the employees are striking FOR in your tweets. Their schedules are RIDICULOUS
