Energy companies came out on top with Occidental Petroleum posting the biggest gain.

Houston's biggest companies have largely outperformed the broad market S&P 500 through the third quarter, with energy companies leading the gains. Riding the tide of higher oil prices, shares ofStocks overall ended the third quarter on a sour note Friday, with the S&P 500 index dropping 500 points. That drove the S&P 500 index 25 percent lower for the year.
