The varying destruction in Ian's wake comes down to building codes

When Hurricane Ian slammed into Florida's Southwest coast on Wednesday, five to six feet of storm surge flooded the first floor of Budge Huskey's home on a barrier island in Bonita Springs.

Some of the hardest hit areas, including Sanibel and Captiva islands, are tourist meccas in part because of their Old Florida charm — low- and midrise structures that were built well before building codes changed. "It’s a double-edged sword. More affluent people are buying more recent construction that are focused on hurricane codes, but the most expensive homes are on the water, so they're the most exposed, particularly as it relates to storm surge and flooding on the first floor."
