As the Morrison Ranch Commercial Center got approval for one Fry's grocery store, another was opening. Fry's targeted Oct. 5 to open its new north Phoenix store.

Gilbert's Planning Commission gave unanimous approval for the new Morrison Ranch Commercial Center on the eastern side of town.Food Stores. The 125,000-square-foot grocery store will be accompanied by a fueling station, 17,000 square feet of retail space attached to the Fry's and five pad sites detached from the grocery store. In total, 765 parking spaces are planned for the center. A

The commission gave approval on Oct. 5 to the proposed center that will be located at the northwest corner of Elliot and Power roadsin September but the discussion was pushed ahead to this week.Fred Meyer Stores Inc. — an entity of Cincinnati-based Kroger Co. , the nation's largest grocery chain — acquired the Gilbert parcel from Morrison Ranch Inc. in August 2016 for nearly $4.6 million, according to documents filed with the Maricopa County Recorder's Office.
