Using federal data, a study by Nature Canada and the Natural Resources Defense Council shows the forestry industry is far from a sustainable, net-zero practice.

A quick internet search will get you the carbon footprint of just about anything, whether it’s a car, a flight or even a whole country. In fact, the closest number the federal government publishes is actually below zero.

The oilsands emit 81 megatonnes of carbon annually, while the report finds Canada’s logging industry emits 75 Mt — more than 10 per cent of all emissions nationwide.“We really dug into the accounting and found very significant flaws, omissions and artifices in how Canada was presenting their emissions,” said Jennifer Skene, natural climate solutions policy manager with the Natural Resources Defense Council.

According to the federal government’s annual accounting of all carbon emissions in Canada, the forest absorbs so much carbon from the atmosphere that it cancels out all the emissions from logging. The net emissions from forestry were -6.5 Mt in 2020, the latest year statistics are available. “The logging industry, frankly, has been treated differently for a number of years. You don’t see any conversations about offsets being applied for avoided oil extraction.”

“By 2030, through the sustainable management of our forests, the decarbonization of our manufacturing and supply chains, and the carbon stored in wood products, our sector is poised to pull the equivalent of 30 megatonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year,” the group states on its website.

You produce so much bullshit it's contributing to climate change. Stop.

Garbage Toronto star…we need wood as much as we need gas…
