Workplace Relations Minister Tony Burke has introduced legislation designed to force up wages, particularly for women.
The bill also makes changes to the ‘better off overall test’, abolishes the ABCC, makes job security and gender pay equity explicit goals of the Fair Work Act, prohibits sexual harassment and pay secrecy in the workplace and enshrines the right to request flexible work hours.Business groups are in open warfare with the federal government over sweeping workplace law changes they argue will empower unions to trigger industry-wide strikes and rope employers into pay deals without their consent.
Business Council of Australia chief executive Jennifer Westacott said her organisation wanted substantial amendments to multi-employer bargaining proposals in the bill. Introducing the Secure Jobs, Better Pay bill on Thursday, Burke said the government was open to revising multi-employer agreements to make sure they were “fair, democratic and workable, and occur at the enterprise level”.
In his budget reply speech, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said the new laws would be “a throwback to the 1980s”.“Labor’s changes will impose industry-wide, ‘one size fits all’ conditions which empower unions,” he said.

jamesmassola AngusGthompson Australia has ratified ILO Conventions 87 and 98, which enshrine the right to strike. It’s a widely recognised fundamental human right. Business historically opposes labour power through collective action. What’s changed now is blanket media undermining of the right

jamesmassola AngusGthompson Labor is anti business and pro union. What do you expect will happen. The labor pollies have never run a business so they wouldn’t have any understanding of the increased costs associated with manufacturing today.
