First Coast housing permit numbers rise to begin fourth quarter

Home building permits issued in October increased from September, albeit with the third-fewest permits awarded through the first 10 months of 2022.

The Northeast Florida Builders Association reported 1,132 permits issued in October, a 15.7% jump from September's 978 permits issued. The permits in October 2022 represented a more than 7% uptick from the same month last year, which had 1,057 permits. Through the first 10 months of the year, 12,052 permits have been issued, am 11.2% dip from the 13,575 permits approved over the same period in 2021. If 2022 doesn't hit the 16,138 permits issued last year, that would mark the first decrease in permits in more than a decade.

In October, Duval County issued the most permits at 498, compared to 423 in the same month last year. St. Johns County issued 432 permits in October, up from 330 permits in October 2021. Clay and Nassau counties each issued 105 and 97 permits, respectively, both down from October 2021.Here’s how the total number of permits have grown in the past six years.
