Edmonton man told to pay $2,400 'market adjustment' fee on new car he'd ordered — or lose it

Randy Lowry was excited to sit in the new Kia Telluride he'd ordered from a dealership, but wasn't excited to learn about the car's new price. The sales manager at Kia West Edmonton told him there was an extra $2,400 "market adjustment" fee — and that other dealerships are now charging it, too.

Business I own a KiaCanada vehicle which has been great. It's 12 years old and I will be looking for a replacement in the near future. This really taints the brand as far as I'm concerned. Not an ethical practice.

Business Walk away.

Given that this was an order, does his agreement have any language about price? That might give him a legal position. But if car dealers do this, it will put people off buying. Recession is coming.

Nothing in Canada is straight forward not even buying a car

Sue the dealership. It will cost them way more in lawyers fees than the $2,400.

As this article implictly notes, consumer protection in Canada is a joke. Hopefully, all of the dealers like these ones go bankrupt in the coming recession.

In 2021, dealers refused to sell the cars they had as they were holding out for a certain price. I considered one deal for a week, agreed to it only to have finance guy say the deal was off, got mad when I refused to pay more and yelled 'you're such a Karen!' across the showroom.

This can be very frustrating. The consumer can not pay and cancel the deal. Give bad reviews and send clients to another business. Otherwise, if you want the car, they got you by the privates..

Not an insolated incident. I had the same experience earlier this year when purchasing my FordCanada F-150 Lightning: February 4 - Preview Order $101,465 March 4 - Purchase Agreement $111,465 Was told I didn't have to buy it and 18 other people were lined up to take my spot.

Should've taken the opportunity to walk away and buy a Toyota.

Karma's a b*tch kiawestedmonton

The rip-off continues whether you're buying cars or eating out in a restaurant.....Thank you Tudueau!

This is 100% a dealership fee, not endorsed by the parent company. Most dealerships won’t be around in a few years, as they head to more of an online shopping model & warehouses. They’re just trying to make their money before they close

Business Dealership doing the gouging is Kia West Edmonton. Spread the word. kiawestedmonton

Business Gouging is everywhere.

Another example of our governments incompetence in allowing this and failing to protect consumers in Canada.Weird how so many of our laws mirror the US except consumer protections.Corrupt practices by industry and the government? Obviously protecting consumers is not a priority.

In Maui junk cars everywhere, solution here is the government pays you up to $500 for 2 free car removals a year, transients buy crap car for less then $500 then government pays them the equivalent to take the car away. No insurance is also common. Buy beater! Point A to Point B!

Buy new used!

Stop buying new then! Everyone is getting up the ass! By the dealers!

Shady af.

Go Auto Kia and Jeep in Edmonton are crooks. When I went to pick up my 80k new SUV they changed the wheels with knock off Chinese used wheels, taking the light weight wheels off. Never buy a car from them unless you like being taken advantage of.

More scams to extract more money. What an offensive practice. That’s takin supply/ demand too far and just being unethical

Same thing with me . SPToyota asked me $5000 extra on delivery

Shame on KiaCanada and any other dealer that does this. I have bought 6 new Kia's in my lifetime and loyalty/honour goes both ways. Disgusting practice.

Unethical.... but then again the auto sales group has always been greasy. How cliche.

There is a special place in hell for Car Salesmen. Right next to politicans. Get your money back.

Its been going on for a while. I went to get mazda and at the very end, they added 900 dollars in dealer fees(gps package), which they never told me about. When i resisted, they just said there 100 more people in line to get this car and if i walk away, no one cares.

🤣😂🤣😂 Greed Greed Greed

Quebec lady $20 000

When we were new to Canada, we lost $500 to a dealer We felt stupid to even ask. But then we look at other Canadians losing money to CRA scams politics in millions and billion But we are happy now looking at Canadian fools ($16.5m Haiti, $40 billion to FNCW)

Car salesman still cons

Is this not a Breach of Contract?

Tell them to shove it

Just the beginning.

LOL, no surprise here that the OMVIC has no teeth. It's like the tobacco companies setting up a research center in the 80's to study the effects of smoking.

We are Kia owners here in saskatoon we recently downsized from a Sorento to a Seltos. The dealership here is pretty good overall. It sounds like the one you delt with is total B.S.

They'd get a big fat HELL NO from me. There are other places to take your business to.

Just walk away. That dealership would make money on the deal only $2400 less. For the dealership to arbitrarily pick $2400 is not right. Sounds like they are giving their customers a lowball price. I bet there are dozens of other customers being screwed.

It all started with employee pricing. When the auto industry was suffering they sucked up for support. Now when things are tight, they gouge. I hate sales people. Their only job is to separate me from my money. Always left with a feeling of how bad did I get taken.

Far better choices than a Kia out there. Your money your choice.

lol

As long as I got my deposit back, I'd be saying 'I've got your market adjustment right here!'.

Similar to new construction houses in the beginning of the year

I’ve been a KiaCanada owner for years. Not anymore. This is BS! This is a huge argument for private sale purchases.

Similar with MetrotownMitsu - put a deposit on a 2023 Outlander Hybrid. Waited 6 months and told price is $5000k more due to market adjustment and unsure interest rates. Asked for deposit back - nadda yet after a month. No bill of sale yet or anything!

I will walk on the deal 100/100

Just look at the administration fee , companies are greedy , , we already pay for the license and other things in the price . In NL

Rackateering!

I'd say it's time for some serious overhaul if consumer protection legislation.

Just buy an older used car for $2400 and done (no hidden or extra fees). If you have tens of thousands to spend on a car, buy an older one, fix it up and u still have leftover. If ur leasing, that is not wise. Cars are liabilities anyway.

Professional plumber, professional electrician, professional businessman, lots of different professionals but one again no mention of a professional car salesman. Black eye for this dealership

shameful kiawestedmonton kia Edmonton

Hate to say this but karma is a bitch. Unfortunately, once the chip shortage and global supply pick up, they’re be a glut of new vehicles stuck on car lots with dealers payer lot fees etc and not near as many purchasers due to sky high interest rates.

Does that go straight into the sales manager’s pocket?

What goes around comes around , happens all the time. Yes, cars are in a so called short supply but it won’t last. Dealership that treat customers properly will be rewarded, those who don’t will get a black eye and word will get out big time.

How to fix. Not one Canadian buy a KIA

Car dealers are bottom feeders.

Can’t have a bill of sale without a vin, so naturally that isn’t possible when ordering a vehicle that’s months away. The worksheet or whatever it’s called with a paid deposit is the closest thing to a legal contract that can be done.

Stealership!

Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council sounds like one of those toothless organizations that purportedly 'control' an industry but that only exist by the grace of that same industry so never really bite down hard on the hand that feeds them. Prove us wrong. Adv = final. AMVIC2

That’s been happening all over Canada

Not in stock. No problem, just order one. Oh,and we’ll just keep raising the price, even though your car keeps getting closer to being last years model.

Never buy asian cars!

Yeah that’s illegal.

Whoa!!!

Thanks Trudeau.

What shameful behaviour by Kia. Extra 2,400 or 5k on an agreed upon price? Thats disgusting. Id make them sign a carved in stone contract…I guess we need to bring a lawyer when we buy a car now…

We ordered snow tires at a Ford dealership in Vic BC. When we went to pick up the tires we were told they made a mistake and couldn't honour the price. We showed them the print out with the total price and aggreement. We refused to pay the 300 extra & left. Done with Ford forever

If you want to see dinosaurs you don’t need to go to a museum just drop by a car dealership. Good on him for telling them to shove their Kia.

If true the biggest load of 💩 is the dealer telling the cust the vehicle would be sent back to Kia. The supposed market adj was due to short supply and they’re going to return a sellable car? F**kin liars. “Go Public checked the vehicle's id and learned the Kia was sold in AB”

What is the point of pre-buying something, if they’re not going to honour the price? THIS is why we have inflation. Pure, unchecked greed.

Fairly sure that’s illegal…or at the very least slimy. Consult a lawyer.

what is this fee for; how they able to tack on additional fees if you've already agreed on a price Are all dealerships doing this

Made a deal to trade 2017 Legacy at Steele Honda for a 2022 Civic. After a few months informed the ETA was in a few weeks but it would bea 2023 with a price tag higher by about 1K, trade value decreased by 2K and a higher interest rate. Still driving the Legacy.

carriboulton was this the same Kia dealership that did it to you?

Happened to me and I did not understand. I was told it's some kind of a mandatory depreciation value. This will be my last kia.

If this so-called “market adjustment fee” or any other fees was not disclosed in the signed contract then the buyer is under no obligation to pay it.

Kia was mistake no. 1

We've come to a time line that you get more reliability with you business dealings with a Drug Kingpin than your local car dealer.

What a BS. This is not stocks

KiaCanada should be ashamed of themselves. An offer was made, a deposit was given. It should be honoured. That whole market adjustment charge is just a bull$hit blackmail stunt.

Glad you pasted the dealers place, all Edmonton people boycott this unethical dealer (bet he also rips people off in the service dept) Kia Canada cop out, yes they do have control over the dealers tarnishing the brand (how do you like the free publicity now)

Did Randy receive cerb?

We bought a Honda HRV back in September and is still waiting for it. After signing the paperwork the sales person indirectly suggests to us that we buy some extras like extended warranty or rustproofing so we can get our car faster

Tell them to keep the car

Surprise! kiawestedmonton Kia West Edmonton was established in 2001 and has grown to become one of the premier Kia auto dealers in the Alberta region and Canada. leggatkia Ontario Kia lovers, this is the place to get Kia news, special offers, etc. At Leggat Kia in Burlington.

Kia is crap!

The correct response is 'Yes, the sale is off'. Grow a pair and walk away from these people.

Hey sales manager, shove that car up your ying yang, I’m sure it’ll fit comfortably.

Um offer, acceptance and consideration of $1000 paid. Sounds like a contract to this lawyer!

The dealer has effectively borrowed money from this fellow and should have to pay interest back to the customer if they’re dishonouring the agreement.

They wonder why car salesman have a bad reputation. Sleazy. In the old days your word mattered. It was your reputation.

Good for him, everyone must do the same, think about it if they don’t !

What a cop out response by KiaCanada! I was considering buying a Seltos but not now. I was very hesitant to order a vehicle for fear of this type of price gouging occuring. Better to wait until spring if you can or longer to see how market changes.

Tesla is -------- vertically integrated They sell --------- direct to the consumer These legacy companies and this Tom Foolery the dealers play w/their customers, is pure shenanigans. It will come back to bite them .
