Greens want Anthony Albanese to ditch compensation to coal companies and force gas giants to pay for household relief.

Adam Bandt is demanding Labor force gas giants pay for even greater household bill relief via a windfall profits tax as a condition of Greens support for the government’sIn an extraordinary move that could see the government accused of undermining parliamentary norms, Labor confirmed on Sunday that it will attempt to ram its gas legislation through both houses of parliament on Thursday.

“Short-term measures to address the cost of living crisis driven by coal and gas prices are necessary, but I am yet to see a copy of any proposed legislation or receive a detailed briefing from government,” Senator Pocock said. “Now that the door has been opened for direct payments from the Commonwealth to deal with the energy crisis, the Greens will push for more support to households, including direct subsidies and grants for people to switch from gas appliances to electric.”At a national cabinet meeting on Friday, Federal, state and territory governments agreed to spend up to $3 billion on power-bill “savings” to low- and medium-income households and cap gas and coal prices to save consumers an average $230 a year.

“Why does he think it’s okay for gas companies to charge way above the odds, way above what they were getting last year, to Australian factories and households,” Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said. “The government said it was introducing a temporary price cap – but now we learn those caps can be extended and its mandatory code of conduct will have the ongoing power to regulate prices permanently,” said APPEA chief executive Samantha McCulloch.“The powers provided through the bill are extraordinary, providing for the government to control the entirety of the market and intervene in an essentially unlimited way.
