Dallas ISD headquarters in Dallas, Monday, August 9, 2021. Amid pressure from community advocates, the Dallas schools administration pulled a vote to approve a property tax break for a manufacturing company just before trustees were to weigh in on it Thursday night.
She said after the meeting that the process felt too rushed as the district needed more time to provide and work through information. “Does it make sense to continue to grant certain large corporations these huge tax breaks?” DAI leader Bill deHaas said ahead of the meeting. “We already know that we have a crunch on educational spending.”
The fate of the project didn’t just lie in DISD. The facility would stretch into Lancaster school boundaries as well.Lawmakers let the program expire, but it could be revived in some form during the upcoming session. If that happens, it could change what happens with the company and Dallas ISD. Earlier this week, Comptroller Glenn Hegar issued a statement saying his office has been flooded by an “extraordinary” number of Chapter 313 applications ahead of a Dec. 31 deadline.
