Bed Bath & Beyond is closing its South San Jose store and plans to let go of all 36 of its employees.
The struggling home goods retail chain plans to shutter the store and layoff its workers March 26, Lori Jablczynski, its senior employment counsel, said in a letter to state employment officials made public this week. Some of the affected employees may be able to transfer to the company's other stores, which would reduce the number of job cuts, Jablczynski said in the letter, which was dated Dec. 1.
Store shoppers interviewed Thursday were disappointed about its closure. San Jose resident April Galindo said she visited the Almaden location often because it was the closest one to her. She used to do a lot of pick-ups at the store, ordering merchandise ahead of time online.Jackie C., who declined to give her last name, said she didn't shop at the store often. The San Jose resident was there Thursday because the store had a big holiday sale going on, she said.
The big question that she and other people are going to have is what will replace Bed Bath & Beyond, she said. The store's building in Almaden Plaza already has at least one other vacancy — the space that used to be occupied by party supply vendor Diddams.
