The university had long discussed acquiring a blood donation center across the street from its main campus. Now plans are underway to convert the space for USF's use.

determined the acquisition posed too much of a risk to its own operations, my colleague Alex Barriera reported in July.

The 1.5-acre 250 Masonic offers a USF property of a similar size directly across the street from a portion of its 55-acre main campus that spans the Inner Richmond and Western Addition neighborhoods. The university’s plans to convert the existing facility there will require a conditional use permit and signoff from the San Francisco Planning Commission.

USF President Paul J. Fitzgerald said in a statement in September that the university had been in discussions with the nonprofit that formerly owned the blood center for a decade,of the university’s academic space in as long. The university’s application notes the conversion will cost an estimated $6 million.

“This building gives us the chance to realize our strategic plan to expand interdisciplinary learning and research in the sciences, especially life sciences,” Fitzgerald said in the release. USF said at the time it was applying for a change of use permit from the city, but noted it was still soliciting ideas for the property and other campuses spaces that"may be freed up by moves to" 250 Masonic from the campus community.

The Irwin Donation Center, the building’s current tenant, will remain in the building through March, per the university.
