In the California exodus, the list of winning states is a familiar one. Think Texas, Florida and Idaho. uscensusbureau

California saw almost 1% of its residents move to other states in the year ended July 1, 2022, according to the latest Census Bureau data. That was a similar loss to the prior year, but this year’s out-migration was offset in part by international migration into the state and more births than deaths.

California topped the list of states losing the most residents, with a net domestic migration loss of 343,230 residents for the year. Overall, California’s population fell 113,649, or 0.3%, in the 12 months ended July 1, 2022. That was better than the biggest loser: New York, which saw its population fall by 180,341 people.

California saw a population gain of 106,155 due to births outnumbering deaths. That placed California in second place for natural population increase, behind Texas’ gain of 118,159. The Golden State topped the list when it came to net international migration, gaining 125,715 people, followed closely by Florida’s gain of 125,629 and Texas’ 118,614. Every state and the District of Columbia had net gains from international migration in the past year.
