Today's automobile scene is vastly different from that of 30 years ago: Oldsmobile and Suzuki are just two of the brands that disappeared along the way. phoenix

I couldn’t have predicted the changes I’ve seen in the 30 years I’ve been testing cars for the Phoenix Business Journal. Chronicling what happens in 2023 and beyond will be up to others as this marks the end of my run as an auto columnist.

Taken for granted today, antilocks began an ever-accelerating wave of new technology that continues to amaze. Comparing vehicles with and without antilocks on a slick course sold me. I often thought of buying a classic 1966 Ford Mustang GT like I had in college, but no longer. I want those antilocks, traction control, driver-assistance tech — and cupholders.

Historic American brands Oldsmobile, Mercury, Pontiac as well as foreigners Daewoo, Suzuki and Isuzu bit the dust on my watch. I don’t miss Suzuki Vitara or the odd-looking Pontiac Aztec, but I wish Pontiac Firebird, quirky, lovable Saabs, and the fun little Isuzu Rodeo still were around. Brands still going strong also have had some missteps.
