The appointment of Sultan al-Jaber is 'tantamount to putting the head of a tobacco company in charge of negotiating an anti-smoking treaty,' said one campaigner.

The UAE announced Sultan al-Jaber, who heads the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company , the world's 12th-largest oil giant by production, will serve as president of the 28th United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in November.

"This appointment risks further undermining the credibility of global climate talks and threatens the action and leadership needed for a rapid and equitable phase out of all fossil fuels." The company's new oil and gas production in that time is expected to "lock in over 2.7 [gigatonnes] of CO2 emissions, which is equivalent to one year of the European Union's CO2 emissions from fossil fuels," said the group.
