Canada's alcohol industry is pushing back against a call for mandatory warning labels on booze containers as suggested in new guidance that also greatly limits the recommended amount Canadians should be drinking.

CJ Hélie, president of Beer Canada, said the industry is voluntarily informing people to drink responsibly so there's no need for any labels.

The guidance is based on the findings of a panel of 23 experts who reviewed nearly 6,000 peer-reviewed studies as part of a two-year process that also considered feedback from 4,845 people during an online public consultation process in spring 2021. However, Hélie questioned the experts' methodology and said the current findings required an independent review, a sentiment echoed by Spirits Canada president Jan Westcott.

Rob Taylor, spokesman for Wine Growers Canada, said the group did not take part in the consultations. He said it launched an online initiative called "The Right Amount" in November to educate consumers about responsible drinking and how to calculate the number of standard drinks in a glass or bottle of alcohol, depending on the volume and percentage of alcohol.

Paradis called the QR code a marketing tool and disagreed with its focus on binge drinking rather than the risks of low levels of consumption. Advice should come from health experts, she said.

So what was the controlled study?. Were the tissues exposed to air pollutants, additives in our food, stress? What are their genetics. 100 yrs in they don't know what causes cancer or let alone how to stop it. They are guessing. Anything in excess is not good for you.

It should be common knowledge for adults to know alcohol is dangerous and any under age people drinking it are not going to read a warning label lol. So, what is the point?

LOL

Put a mask 😷 on all the bottles. Remind Canadians that Covid still exists.

Hush now, do what your government tells u.

Did they put those warnings on the vax too? Caution may cause sudden death, cardiac arrest, clots, etc etc

Greed!

Would like to see advertising restrictions the same as tobacco too. Alcohol is a perfectly fine drug for responsable adults to consume & enjoy in moderation imo. However, pushing consumers to drink/buy more to maximize profits goes against public health.

Slowly taking away alcohol. Slowly moving to an Islamic State. Doesn’t anyone one else see it?

School industry what two drunk teachers

More people have Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder than Downs Syndrome and Autism combined. You can not repair permanent brain damage. 62 percent of our jails have FASD. Approximately 120,000 school age children have FASD in Ontario.

In the year 2000 the federal government overwhelmingly voted to put warning labels on alcohol bottles but left it up to individual provinces. Ontario declined. The warning label should read “consumption of alcohol during pregnancy can cause brain damage to the unborn child”.

senatorbrazeau alcoholawareness The alcohol industry has no place in health, and public health policies! For years, they have misled, deceived, and kept consumers in the dark, from the dangers and risks of drinking their products, including cancer! 'Scandalous cover up!

Thank you Captain Obvious.

roughly 4000 Canadians die yearly due to alcohol...not to mention the enormous impact on obesity and multiple cancers and diabetes...no warning eh? Why does cannabis require warning labels?you post its harmful with no evidence and with 0 deaths annually

Ask the endocrinologists and gastroenterologists how they like the staggering number of alcohol damaged patients in their practices.

If leaders don’t care abt public health, what difference wld labeling do?

Do it

True we have enough warning labels already. We all are well aware of effects of alcohol and as adults make that choice. Ridiculous are you going to put warnings on sidewalks as a tripping hazard. Or on every plane seat that they are deadly if they crash etc. waste of time and $

Hahahaha...no bias there is there 😃

I mean, we know alcohol is toxic af

Coal Mine Owner says risks of Black Lung are overstated and don’t require warning labels.

Pfft, but let's keep packaging our THC products in impenetrable layers of plastic and labeling them as hazardous medication. The hypocrisy is delicious.

No they are not. They are long overdue.

In other news; Canadian sex traffickers say that age of consent is unnecessary.

We can't handle floofy warning distractions....we've been concentrating on that 'Don't Drink and Drive' nonsense.

*WARNING* Alcohol gets you drunk

Isn’t sugar worse than alcohol? How about we put warning labels on foods that have an insane amount of sugar as an ingredient?

Labeling will only add to the cost of the product which will be borne by the consumer.

Of course! What else would they say?

Warning labels on everything but the vaccines. 🤷‍♂️

Sure, why not? Every other drug that's socially accepted has a warning.

Schools should take this up too. Many things cause cancer, not just smoking.

Perhaps stop advertising alcohol on TV during events that young kids watch.

There you go more government overreach.

Didn’t the tobacco companies say that too!?

I like scotch

vested interests

Who reads warning labels? 😂

Fox Says Door to Hen House is Not Required

🤣😂

I agree. Noone reads them.

Because of course they would.

Alcohol is way too socially accepted as the norm. It's super destructive to society. One of the worst drugs of em all. Thank goodness I came to my senses and cut it out entirely.

Welcome to Ontario we have warning labels as far as the eye can see. *Warning ⚠️ This is an opinion that might trigger some people.

Much like Big Tobacco thought more warnings would stop people from smoking? These people are already hooked, a new warning isn't going to scare them away

McDonald's is dangerous, why not put labels on junk fries

Everyone knows alcohol is bad for you just as they know smoking as bad for you, all the warnings in the world won't stop people from using these products it's just simple fact and the warnings actually male kids want to try it because it's now all of a sudden cooler

lol, cigarette companies agree… how about we ask doctors? People whose opinions are relevant not those profiting off booze.

Obviously they would say that. But since the health risks are real and we forced similar labels on tobacco it’s o my fair we label alcohol.

The cigarette companies said the same thing

Sure Jan

Obviously. It's bad for business.

In other news, cancer says cancer nothing to worry about.

Of course they’re going to say that. Any amount of alcohol is dangerous.

'12 year old says curfew not necessary'

For those interested, here is 2nd Reading of my Bill S254. 🙏🏼🪶

What’s unnecessary is the huge tax profits the government is making off the taxpayers ripping them off and paying extremely high prices for alcohol but absolutely nothing from Conservative Party 24

Cuckastan wants to regulate everything so the plebs don't kill themselves. It's for your safety.

Oh boy well I'll sure trust the alcohol industry on their thoughts on alcohol legislation. I'd sure trust the cigarette industry with smoking legislation too. I see no issue in this plan 🙄

Liberals : 'But how will us Stupid regular people know what's good or bad without the smart gov. people making pictures for us?'

Just let me drink mi blasted Liquor

The alcohol industry in Canada makes billions, warning labels would hurt profits.🙄

What’s unnecessary is the massive inflation on alcohol compared to the rest of the world

Let's remove them from cigarettes now. Save that money and put it towards something beneficial.

Of course they would say that. I just watched this podcast by hubermanlab last week and it really taught me a lot about alcohol’s effects (even “light to moderate” drinking).

Karen’s Gone Wild!!!!

😂

There is literally no one in all of Canada who doesn't know that alcohol is both terrible for you and those around you, and yet at the same time awesome.

I enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine. But the warnings are necessary—even my drs have never mentioned alcohol increases my risk of my breast cancer returning. I happen to already be aware of the risk, but lots of people aren’t, including drs.

Honest to God. Why do Canadian need to be treated like children ?

Nothing good can come out of drinking alcohol.

Smokers have been saying this for year's 🤷 never changed a thing in the long run.

Of course they would say that, labels will potentially reduce sales. Alcohol is absolutely horrible for you. But I think that most Canadians know the risks.

True... Are there warning labels on McDonald's packaging?

If everyone knows already, why the protest?
