“One of the main goals of legalization of cannabis was to reduce criminal activity by keeping profits out of the pockets of criminals,” the department wrote in an October 17 briefing note Cannabis Black Market. From our newsroom to your inbox at noon, the latest headlines, stories, opinion and photos from the Toronto Sun.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

“One has to be careful not to move above the illegal price,” Mostafa Askari, then-assistant budget officer, told reporters at the time. “As soon you move above the illegal market price, based on our estimates, you lose a lot of market share to the illegal market so that defeats the purpose.”

They don't control anything.... There's still.choice. sadly, the government should have turned to the huge number of 'farmers' they've arrested before going into business for themselves. The experience and knowledge were there, they chose to ignore it. Oh the lessons they missed

So its not ok for the drug dealers to be drug dealers but its ok for Canada's cannabis market to be drug dealers🤦‍♂️ CANADA LAND OF THE HYPOCRITICAL LEADERSHIP.

Out in the west pretty sure it is 50% or greater!

The foreign owned Beer Store controls 100% of the Ontario Market.

Ontario and NC are the largest purchasers of alcohol in the world. We are drug dealers. No question.

What makes you say Canada isn't a drug dealer?

The funny thing is… Liberals actually claimed this drug promoting policies would eradicate the black market. Drug dealers who made $1000s by doing nothing were just going to go away. - “Ah well. We had a good run dealing drugs. Let’s go get a job at McDonald’s now…”

govt weed is expensive garbage, so no big surprise

Looks good on government that tried to hand the cannabis industry to corporate friends instead of giving opportunities to regular Canadians

Because they provide a superior product...duh

All I can say is GrowYourOwnTherapy & enjoy CannaScience benefits.

Well that kinda ...didn't work

Meanwhile, at the legal shop...

Minors still buying weed. Good job Canada

You mean the legal producers and their side business illegal production and distribution ?

Raise thc limits, raise edible thc limits if you want this to stop. Why would I spend 50 bucks for a bunch of edibles that equal 100mg when I can just go to the black market and get a 100mg edible for 10 bucks. The legal market is a rip off and the product sucks

who cares

Taxes and regulations. I hope the 4 plant legal grow was considered.

because people can buy cheaper

Because the government set the price too high. Period!

Allow smoking lounges and accessibility to the tourism sector. Sales of the highly taxed, poor quality product will soar

One drug dealer trying to push out the other

hopefully that number gets a little higher thats who started the cannabis trade thats where the good Cannabis will always be

Lol...it's better and cheaper.

They’re doing a much better job is the only reason. If the government wants to corner the market they’ve got to lower prices.

So?

It's a shame Trudeau didn't hire them all. They at least know what they are doing. Now he's the drug dealer.

well the governments weed is over priced and dry

Better quality. Legalize micro-gros to supply local dispensaries. Tax opportunities are huge. Will also create a better and stronger market.

weird

Focus on hard drugs ruining our society. Thank you.

Deloitte said the cannabis sector has generated more than $15 billion in direct and indirect tax revenue for Canadian and provincial governments, while creating more than 151,000 jobs since Canada legalized recreational use of the drug in Oct.Feb 1, 2022

Hmmm. I've also heard it's cheaper to just grow it yourself, which is also legal there, than to buy it from legal weed stores and so stores themselves aren't doing too great

Is Doug involved? Just asking for some friends.

The biggest drug dealers in the world are the pharmaceutical companies more people are addicted to their medication than any others in the world!!

In other words they have lost 67% of their market in under 5 years

How many does Ford own. Wasn’t he a drug dealer? His buddies knew where to get guns too. Suspicious.

Didn’t see that coming. 🙃

Good. Less toxic sprays (mostly).

Better than 100%. progress

So only 1/3, down from the whole thing.

Technically, the government is also now a drug dealer. I want to know who’s selling drugs but isn’t a dealer.

Down from 100?

Probably more than 33% tbh. It's been how many years, and we still have no clue where the revenue goes from commercial pot sales. By all accounts we should have lowered taxes by now, had hot meals for kids in schools and better health care. Someone made a ton this is certain

I could go clean out the local liquor store of 1000s of dollars of liquor, enough to kill myself many times over, but more than 30 grams of pot? Nope, illegal for whatever stupid reason. Amounts over 30gs is where black market holds its power still.

Time to lower store prices. People are gonna shop where they get the best value for the money.
