The business practices of Spar, one of SA's largest retailers, came under scrutiny in November last year, following complaints by a dozen retailers that they had been badly treated by the group's leadership.

Two months later the grocery chain announced a sweeping board shakeup, with CEO Brett Botten announcing his resignation. Spar's ex-CEO Graham O'Connor, who resigned as chairperson in December, will also leave the group's board. Why is Spar in the news at all?
