A previous version of this report incorrectly identified Usain Bolt’s country of origin. He is Jamaican.

Bolt’s attorney Linton P. Gordon gave the Associated Press a copy of a letter to SSL demanding that the money be returned. Gordon said Bolt’s account once had $12.8 million but now reflects a balance of only $12,000. According to the Gleaner report, a now-former SSL employee has been implicated in a fraud scheme and may have been linked to the reported issues surrounding Bolt’s investments. Attorney Tamika Harris, who is representing the former employee, was quoted as having said that her client has been talking with legal representatives of SSL for two weeks.

Jamaica’s finance minister, Nigel Clarke, also responded to the situation this week, saying the circumstances were unusual.
