While all eyes are on the Valley, a group of executives will be working behind the scenes at Super Bowl LVII to create a longer term economic impact
Yet something else happened quietly behind the scenes in 1996, when executives with a fast-growing electronic component distributor met with the governor and economic development officials and then took in the big game. A little over a year later, Avnet Inc. decided to move from Great Neck, N.Y., to the Valley, and in 1998 said it would build a new $20 million headquarters facility in Tempe.
As hordes of people get ready to flock to the Phoenix metro to attend the Super Bowl — not to mention the WM Phoenix Open — the executives in charge of this massive undertaking will be working overtime with other members of the business community to try to convince one or more Avnets to relocate to the Valley of the Sun.
There is a process to make sure that we've got the right number of hotel rooms under contract, the right number of other venues under contract. The stadium is the centerpiece of that. As well as transportation, law enforcement, public safety, all those pieces are put in place for the bid. People do not realize what an important element Phoenix Sky Harbor is. The airport infrastructure is super important to hosting a Super Bowl.
Las Vegas will host the game for the first time in 2024, and other new stadiums are being built around the NFL. What do you think sealed the deal for Arizona this time?Bidding on Super Bowls and other major events has become very competitive. Los Angeles hosted last year, so they're back in the game of major events going forward. They're going to host the college football championship this year.
What about the involvement for small businesses to be able to get in on these Super Bowl opportunities?: Most of our [committee] partners and the NFL partners coming in are putting a lot of activation money into our market.
