The UK steel industry, which supports thousands of jobs, is "a whisker away from collapse", the Unite union says.
These included "crippling energy costs, carbon taxes, lost markets, lower demand, and open market access for imported steel". The money has not been confirmed by the Treasury, but the BBC understands it would depend on the firm's Chinese owners, Jingye, investing in greener technology.Responding to the letter, a spokesperson for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy said the government recognised "the vital role that steel plays within the UK economy, supporting local jobs and economic growth".

Because British steel is far too expensive. I spoke to a metal printer in Caldicot who I delivered to whi imports sheets of steel. It's cheaper for them to purchase the plates in Japan and ship them to the UK than it is to purchase them from a UK Steelworks.

Steel production, One of many strategic assets left in the greasy private hands, and this is what happens. Its a good job this didn't happen in Hitlers Germany in 1930's. Nazi jackboots would have been marching up Whitehall.
Why is it we only hear about these ex nationalised companies when they are in the shit? Private when they are profitable, ours when they need a bailout or someone to pick up the tab.

The UK Government should use one of the few actual benefits of Brexit and only procure British steel and put important tariffs on foreign steel.
Until November, I worked in the steel industry, it’s a dying industry, that looses money. Welders and metal workers in this country haven’t had a real pay rise since the 80s. Because of this no one wants to do the work so it goes to other countries.
